Senior Software Engineer

Toast is a rapidly growing company that's revolutionizing how the restaurant industry does business by pairing technology with an extraordinary commitment to customer success. ## What you'll do ) - Drive the evolution of our next-generation timekeeping platform, operating at significant scale and processing tens of millions of shift events each week - Build, run, and improve core backend systems alongside a collaborative, supportive team. - Take end-to-end ownership of systems, contributing to a strong engineering culture focused on quality, reliability, and long-term maintainability - Lead work across the full development lifecycle—design, estimation, implementation, testing, debugging, and deployment—while learning and applying best practices for building and operating reliable systems at scale. - Ship code that directly impacts Toast’s growth and the day-to-day operations of restaurant teams - Partner with product and design to influence what we build and how we build it - Contribute to and elevate team standards through thoughtful code reviews and technical discussions - Mentor and provide technical guidance to other team members   What you'll need to thrive ( ## What you'll bring ) - 5+ years of back-end experience with one or more object-oriented programming languages (such as Java, Kotlin, or similar). - Experience owning and operating production systems. - A track record of tackling ambiguous, high-impact challenges and delivering scalable solutions - Ability and motivation to learn quickly and apply knowledge to solve real problems - A hunger to take on challenging projects and build systems that operate at massive scale. Above all, we’re looking for a strong engineer with solid fundamentals.   Our Tech Stack - A core of Java & Kotlin based backend services - React SPAs leveraging Tailwind, GraphQL and Storybook. - Android app built in Java & Kotlin running in the restaurant - Claude Code and similar AI agentic development tools as part of daily engineering - PostgreSQL and DynamoDB as core persistence - And many more technologies that help us build a top class platform. **This is a hybrid role requiring in-office collaboration two days per week in our Dublin office.**   AI at Toast At Toast, one of our company values is that we're hungry to build and learn.
